Somaliland Marks 35th Independence Anniversary with Nationwide Celebrations, Tight Security and International Guests.

Somaliland prepares for historic May 18 celebrations as citizens rally under the theme “Recognition and Resilience,” with military parades, official ceremonies and enhanced security measures across the country.

HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) Somaliland is set to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the restoration of its independence on Sunday, with nationwide ceremonies, military parades and heightened security as citizens across the territory mark one of the most significant dates in Somaliland’s modern history.

In recent weeks, preparations for the annual May 18 National Day celebrations have intensified across major cities, including Hargeisa, where thousands of residents gathered in public squares waving Somaliland flags and taking part in patriotic events.

This year’s celebration carries the official theme, “Recognition and Resilience,” reflecting what Somaliland officials describe as a historic diplomatic milestone and the continued determination of its people.

The 2026 commemoration is being described by officials as the first May 18 celebration since Israel recognized Somaliland on Dec. 26, 2025, a move seen by many supporters as a breakthrough in Somaliland’s decades-long pursuit of international recognition since its original independence on June 26, 1960.

A major national ceremony is scheduled to take place at the main celebration grounds in Hargeisa, where units from Somaliland’s armed forces are expected to conduct military parades and ceremonial displays.

The event is expected to be attended by Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, leaders of both houses of parliament, senior government officials, opposition party leaders, and international guests arriving from various parts of the world.

Authorities have introduced strict security measures ahead of the celebrations. Public district processions traditionally held in different parts of the capital have been suspended, while the Somaliland Police Force announced restrictions on overnight vehicle movement across regions and districts beginning at midnight.

President Irro, former national leaders, parliamentary speakers, and leaders of the ruling and opposition political parties have issued messages congratulating Somaliland citizens worldwide ahead of the national anniversary celebrations.
