Somaliland and Israel are set to formally exchange ambassadors as diplomatic sources point to possible new recognition announcements from African nations.
HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) Somaliland and Israel are expected to formally exchange ambassadors on Monday in a major diplomatic milestone, coinciding with Somaliland’s 35th Independence Day celebrations and growing international attention over the territory’s recognition campaign.
Diplomatic officials said Dr. Mohamed Hagi, Somaliland’s newly appointed ambassador to Israel, is currently in Jerusalem ahead of the official diplomatic ceremony.
In a message posted on social media alongside photos from Jerusalem, Hagi wrote: “This year’s celebration is unlike any before it. Happy 18th of May.”
Meanwhile, Israeli diplomat Michael Lotem is expected in Hargeisa for the formal presentation of credentials, marking the first official ambassadorial exchange between the two governments since Israel recognized Somaliland as an independent state in December 2025.
Diplomatic speculation intensified on Sunday after Amjad Taha posted on social media that several African nations could announce recognition of Somaliland during Monday’s celebrations.
According to the post, Madagascar, Comoros and Vanuatu are among countries reportedly expected to make diplomatic announcements, with The Gambia also mentioned as a possible participant.
No official confirmation has yet been issued by the governments involved, but the reports have fueled excitement across Somaliland as citizens prepare for nationwide celebrations under this year’s theme, “Recognition and Resilience.”
The developments mark what could become one of the most significant diplomatic moments in Somaliland’s modern history, 35 years after it restored its sovereignty on May 18, 1991.
