Dozens Killed in Central Mali as Al-Qaida-Linked Attacks Deepen Security Crisis.

BAMAKO, Mali (Horn post) More than 30 people have been killed in a series of deadly attacks in central Mali, as armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda intensified assaults across the conflict-hit West African nation, according to local officials and regional security reports.

The attacks, which targeted villages and transport routes in central Mali, mark the latest escalation in a worsening security crisis that has destabilized large parts of the country despite ongoing military operations by Malian forces and allied regional partners.

Residents and local authorities reported that heavily armed militants launched coordinated raids in several communities, killing civilians and triggering fresh displacement fears in already fragile regions.

The violence comes amid increasing activity by extremist groups operating across the Sahel, including factions linked to Al-Qaida and the Islamic State group, which have expanded influence in rural territories where government control remains limited.

Security analysts say Mali’s transitional authorities are facing mounting pressure as insurgent attacks continue to target both civilians and military installations. The latest violence follows major attacks carried out against government forces last month, raising concerns over the military’s ability to contain the insurgency.

Mali has experienced years of instability since a 2012 rebellion and subsequent military coups, with armed groups exploiting ethnic tensions, weak governance and economic hardship to strengthen their presence across the Sahel region.

Regional observers warn that the deteriorating situation in Mali could further threaten neighboring countries including Burkina Faso and Niger, where jihadist violence has also intensified in recent years.

International humanitarian agencies have meanwhile expressed concern over rising civilian casualties, displacement and growing humanitarian needs as insecurity spreads across central and northern Mali.
