
HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) Somaliland’s Cabinet on Wednesday reviewed national security, economic conditions and preparations for the country’s May 18 independence anniversary, according to an official statement from the Presidency.
The 62nd session of the Council of Ministers was chaired by Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, who is serving as acting president, and held at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa.
Security Situation Stable Nationwide
Interior and National Security Minister Abdalle Mohamed Arab briefed the Cabinet that the overall security situation across Somaliland’s regions remains stable, with no reports of unrest or disturbances.
Minister Abdale said national security agencies are on heightened alert as the country prepares to mark the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Somaliland’s independence on May 18. The minister urged citizens to maintain vigilance and support efforts to preserve peace and stability.
402 Families Resettled in Hargeisa
Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs Minister Suleiman Duale Haji Jama reported that 402 internally displaced families have been relocated from temporary settlements to a designated area allocated by the Hargeisa Municipality.
He said the ministry, working with partners including NADFOR and UNHCR, has delivered humanitarian assistance to the families, including food, water, shelter materials, cooking utensils, blankets, solar lamps and water containers.
The minister called on government institutions and humanitarian organizations to support the development of the new settlement and strengthen the livelihoods of the resettled families.
May 18 Celebrations Advance
Presidency Minister Khadar Hussein Abdi, deputy chair of the national committee organizing the May 18 celebrations, told the Cabinet that preparations are progressing smoothly.
He said coordinated plans are in place at district, regional and national levels, including public awareness campaigns, urban beautification efforts and official ceremonies. Authorities aim to mark the 35th anniversary with events reflecting national unity, statehood and historical significance.
Economic Pressures Linked to Regional Conflict
Finance and Economic Development officials briefed ministers on economic conditions, citing the impact of ongoing conflict in the Middle East on Somaliland’s economy.
The Cabinet noted rising prices for basic goods and fuel, placing pressure on households. The Finance Ministry is conducting a comprehensive study to identify national strategies to mitigate future economic shocks and strengthen resilience.
Government Welcomes Returnees
In his closing remarks, Vice President Aw Abdi said the government welcomes the return of Somaliland citizens living abroad, particularly those who can contribute to peace and national cohesion.
He specifically welcomed the reported return of traditional leader Sultan Wabar and called on others outside the country to come back and participate in Somaliland’s development and stability.
