Somaliland officials say additional countries could recognize Somaliland following Israel’s landmark diplomatic recognition in December 2025.
HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) Somaliland government officials said Sunday that the territory’s 35th Independence Day celebrations could coincide with new diplomatic breakthroughs, as several countries are reportedly considering formal recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
Officials in Hargeisa said discussions are ongoing with multiple international partners following the historic decision by Israel on Dec. 26, 2025, to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state — becoming the first United Nations member state to do so.
According to officials and regional diplomatic sources, some nations associated with the Abraham Accords are being closely watched as potential next countries to establish formal diplomatic ties with Somaliland.
While no government has officially confirmed imminent recognition, Somaliland authorities say recent diplomatic momentum has created renewed optimism among citizens and political leaders after more than three decades of seeking international recognition.
The developments come as thousands of Somalilanders gather across Hargeisa and other major cities to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Somaliland’s restoration of sovereignty, with this year’s theme centered on recognition, resilience and international partnership.
Israel described its recognition as being “in the spirit of the Abraham Accords,” signaling potential broader geopolitical implications in the Horn of Africa.
