LONDON (Horn post) Syria will not join any conflict involving Iran unless it is directly targeted, President Ahmed al-Sharaa said, underscoring Damascus’ intention to maintain neutrality amid rising regional tensions.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Chatham House research center in London, al-Sharaa stated that Syria has chosen to stay out of the ongoing confrontation involving Iran unless its national security is threatened.
“We have no issue with Iran in Tehran, but we have a problem with Iran in Damascus,” the president said, referring to Tehran’s past involvement in Syria during the rule of former president Bashar al-Assad. He added that Iranian intervention had helped sustain the previous government while contributing to the displacement of Syrian civilians.
Al-Sharaa noted that there has been no diplomatic engagement between Syria and Iran since the current conflict began, and that formal relations between the two countries remain absent.
He emphasized that Syria favors a negotiated solution with Iran rather than further escalation, reiterating that his government seeks to avoid being drawn into another war.
The president acknowledged that the regional situation remains volatile and warned that Syria could potentially become a target. However, he stressed that the country is not prepared for renewed conflict.
“Our priority is reconstruction and development,” al-Sharaa said, adding that efforts are also focused on facilitating the return of Syrian refugees and stabilizing the country after years of war.
The remarks come amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, as regional actors reassess their positions in an increasingly fragile security environment.
