Somaliland Upper House Speaker Urges Swift Action to Restore Security in Awdal–Selel Conflict.

Hargeisa (Horn Post) — Saleban Mohamoud Adan, Chairman of the House of Elders of the Somaliland Parliament, has called for urgent measures to restore security and accelerate peace efforts in the western regions of Somaliland, as clashes continue in Awdal and Selel.

Speaking during a national consultation meeting in Hargeisa, the veteran statesman commended President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro and his administration for convening a broad-based gathering of national leaders to address the escalating conflict.

Call for Immediate Peace and Security Measures

Saleban stressed that the current priority must be restoring security without delay, warning that the situation requires urgent intervention.

“The situation now demands that security be ensured immediately,” he said, urging authorities to expedite peacebuilding efforts and deliver a lasting resolution between the two communities involved in the conflict.

He described the meeting of national leadership as a critical step, noting that the presence of institutions representing the country’s full authority provides a strong foundation for implementing peace.

Push for Lasting Reconciliation

Saleban Mohamoud Adan, Chairman of the House of Elders of the Somaliland Parliament emphasized the need not only for a ceasefire but also for sustainable reconciliation and binding agreements to prevent further clashes.

He called for intensified mediation efforts, highlighting the traditional role of elders in resolving disputes and fostering long-term stability in Somaliland’s conflict resolution framework.

National Unity Seen as Key

Saleban underscored that Somaliland has the capacity to resolve the crisis internally if leaders act decisively and in unity.

“If we act without hesitation, we are capable of securing peace in the western regions,” he said, adding that delays in response could prolong instability.

The remarks come amid increased efforts by Somaliland authorities to coordinate a national response to the conflict, which has raised concerns over security and humanitarian conditions in affected areas.
