Somaliland House of Representatives Speaker Calls for Immediate Ceasefire and National Response to Awdal–Selel Conflict.

Hargeisa (Horn Post) The Speaker of the House of Representatives of Somaliland Parliament, Yasin Mahmoud Hir Faraton, has called for urgent action to address escalating conflict in western Somaliland, urging authorities to prioritize an immediate ceasefire and coordinated national intervention.

Speaking during a high-level national meeting held at the presidential palace in Hargeisa, Faraton emphasized the need for swift and decisive measures to contain the violence in the regions of Awdal and Selel.

Urgent Call for Ceasefire and Stabilization

The speaker stressed that the first step in addressing the crisis must be the implementation of an immediate ceasefire, followed by comprehensive peacebuilding and stabilization efforts.

“This conflict requires urgent intervention,” Faraton said. “The initial response must focus on a ceasefire, peacebuilding, stabilization, and humanitarian support. Only after that can we examine the underlying causes and why the situation has persisted”

He added that direct assistance to affected communities is critical to reducing the immediate impact of the violence, including support for displaced families and those affected by the unrest.

Focus on Long-Term Solutions

Faraton noted that once the situation is brought under control, authorities should shift focus toward investigating the root causes of the conflict and implementing long-term resettlement and reconciliation measures.

His remarks come amid growing concern among Somaliland leaders over the clashes in Awdal and Selel, which have prompted calls for a unified national response involving government institutions, security forces, and traditional leaders.

National Coordination Efforts

The meeting brought together senior government officials and national leaders to discuss coordinated strategies aimed at restoring peace and stability in the affected regions.

Observers say the speaker’s intervention underscores increasing pressure on Somaliland’s leadership to act swiftly to prevent further escalation and safeguard civilian lives.
