Foreign Ministry says Mogadishu has no legal authority over Somaliland’s diplomatic engagements.
HARGEISA (Horn Post) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland has firmly rejected what it described as “misleading claims” by the Federal Government of Somalian regarding Somaliland’s diplomatic engagement with Israel.
In an official press release, Somaliland authorities said statements from Federal Government of Somalia lack legal, historical, and factual basis, stressing that Somaliland’s foreign relations are conducted independently as a sovereign state.
“The Republic of Somaliland is a sovereign state,” the statement said, noting it gained independence on June 26, 1960, with international recognition at the time. It added that Somaliland’s sovereignty is not derived from, nor dependent on, authorities in Mogadishu.
The government in Hargeisa argued that Somalia has “no legal standing” to interfere in or comment on Somaliland’s bilateral relations, including its engagement with Israel.
Officials also dismissed Somalia’s references to territorial integrity as “misplaced and misleading,” stating that the 1960 union lacked a binding legal framework capable of nullifying Somaliland’s statehood. Somaliland reasserted its independence in 1991 and has since maintained governance within its borders.
The statement highlighted Somaliland’s record over the past three decades, including democratic elections, internal stability, and cooperation in counterterrorism and anti-piracy efforts in the Horn of Africa.
In contrast, it said Somalia continues to depend heavily on international security assistance, raising concerns about long-term stability.
“Somaliland’s relations with the State of Israel, as with all its international partnerships, are conducted in full accordance with international norms,” the statement said.
The government reiterated its commitment to peaceful coexistence and regional stability but emphasized that its sovereignty and foreign policy decisions are “non-negotiable.”
