Hargeisa highlights diaspora advocacy and expert engagement as key to Somaliland’s international outreach.
HARGEISA (Horn post) Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdirahman Dahir Adan, held talks with prominent academic and former Planning Minister Awale Ibrahim Shirwa, underscoring the importance of intellectual and diaspora contributions to Somaliland’s quest for international recognition.
During the meeting at the ministry headquarters in Hargeisa, Adan commanded Shirwa for his sustained efforts and visible role in strengthening and advancing Somaliland’s statehood and national cause.
The minister emphasized that the Foreign Ministry remains open to insights, expertise and recommendations from Somaliland citizens worldwide, particularly those contributing to the country’s diplomatic and development agenda.
Shirwa, a respected academic and former government official, praised the Foreign Ministry leadership for what he described as tangible progress in elevating Somaliland’s international standing. He noted that such efforts are the result of a long-running political and diplomatic struggle.
In recent weeks, Shirwa has been in the United Kingdom, where he participated in international media discussions and policy debates focused on Somaliland’s recognition. Observers say his interventions have combined policy expertise with advocacy, reinforcing Somaliland’s narrative on sovereignty and statehood.
Shirwa is widely regarded as one of Somaliland’s leading intellectual voices advocating for recognition, engaging global audiences through media and policy platforms.
Officials highlighted that both Adan and Shirwa hail from the Awdal and Salal regions, areas often associated with Somaliland’s academic and political leadership.
The meeting reflects Hargeisa’s broader strategy of leveraging experienced policymakers and diaspora figures to strengthen its diplomatic outreach and push for wider international engagement.
