Somaliland Launches $5 Million Water Expansion Project in Ceel Afweyn

$5 million will be invested in the initiative through the Somaliland Development Fund (SDF).

CEEL AFWEYN, Somaliland (Horn Post) — Somaliland’s Minister of Water Resources Development, Mohamed Abdimalik, on Thursday launched a major water expansion project in the town of Ceel Afweyn in the Sanaag region, aimed at improving access to clean water for local communities.

The project will involve transporting water from the Illad area, located approximately 35 kilometers from Ceel Afweyn, as part of a broader effort to address long-standing water shortages in the district.

Speaking during the launch ceremony, the minister announced the official start of the water expansion and pipeline development project connecting Illad to Ceel Afweyn.

“The water expansion and Illad-to-Ceel Afweyn pipeline project will officially begin today. Survey operations will be carried out, teams will travel to Illad, and the work is now commencing,” Minister Mohamed Abdimalik said.

The Somaliland government said the initiative is designed to increase access to potable water and strengthen infrastructure in one of the region’s key towns.

Also speaking at the event, the Director General of Somaliland’s Ministry of Water Development, Abdishakur Ismail Hussien, said the project is expected to cost more than $5 million.

He urged residents of Ceel Afweyn to unite in protecting and supporting the implementation of the development project.

“More than $5 million will be invested in this project. The people of Ceel Afweyn must stand together against anything that could obstruct this project,” the director general said.

Sanag regional governor Mohamoud Rage Ibrahim also welcomed the initiative and linked it to campaign promises made by the ruling Waddani Party.

“It gives me great happiness to see that the promises contained in the Waddani Party manifesto have now reached Ceel Afweyn,” the governor said.

Deputy Team Leader at the Somaliland Development Fund, Najah M Adam (PHD) , also addressed the gathering and urged the community to support and benefit from the water expansion project during its implementation.

Officials from the SDF were also present at the event. The project is expected to play a key role in providing Ceel Afweyn residents with access to clean fresh water and easing the long-standing challenges caused by salty water supplies.

The Illad-to-Ceel Afweyn water expansion project is being funded through the Somaliland Development Fund (SDF), a major development financing mechanism supporting infrastructure and public service projects across Somaliland.
