Somaliland-Israel Relations Highlighted at Israeli Independence Day Event in Washington.

Bashir Goth Meets Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter as Diplomatic Engagement Between Somaliland and Israel Gains Momentum in Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — (Horn post) Growing diplomatic ties between the Republic of Somaliland and the State of Israel were on display in Washington this week as Somaliland’s U.S. Representative, Bashir Goth, met with Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, during celebrations marking Israel’s Independence Day.

The diplomatic engagement was highlighted by former U.S. Special Envoy for the Sahel and Horn of Africa, J. Peter Pham, who shared details of the meeting on X, formerly Twitter.

“Yesterday’s USA celebration of Israeli Independence was the first since the State of Israel became the first sovereign to recognize and exchange ambassadors with the Republic of Somaliland,” Pham wrote. “Great to see Somaliland US head Bashir Goth welcomed by Israel’s Ambassador Yechiel Leiter.”

The event, hosted by the Embassy of Israel in Washington, underscored what observers describe as strengthening diplomatic engagement between Somaliland and Israel amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Horn of Africa and the Middle East.

Israel earlier became the first country reported to formally recognize Somaliland and exchange ambassadors, marking a significant diplomatic milestone for Somaliland, which declared restored independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since sought broader international recognition.

Analysts say the growing relationship between Somaliland and Israel could open the door to deeper cooperation in trade, security, technology, and regional diplomacy, particularly as Gulf and Middle Eastern powers increase strategic engagement across the Horn of Africa.
