
HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) Barkhad Jama Batun, Minister of Information, Culture and Awareness of the Republic of Somaliland and government spokesperson, has thanked citizens, state institutions, security forces, and media organizations, and community groups for their role in the successful May 18 celebrations marking the 35th anniversary of Somaliland’s restored independence.
Speaking at a press conference in Hargeisa, Minister Barkhad praised the Somaliland security forces for maintaining peace, public order, and the smooth coordination of the nationwide celebrations.
The minister specifically commended the National Army, Police Force, Custodial Corps, Immigration Department, Fire and Rescue Force, and Coast Guard for their contribution to ensuring security throughout the events.
Minister Barkhad also expressed appreciation to business leaders, students, youth groups, women, and broader sections of society, saying they demonstrated patriotism, unity, and strong public support during the May 18 commemorations.

The minister further praised Somaliland’s media organizations and journalists for their extensive coverage of the national celebrations, highlighting their role in promoting Somaliland’s identity and statehood to international audiences.
“It cannot be denied how Somaliland journalists stepped forward to showcase the value of their nation,” Barkhad said, thanking print, broadcast, and digital media outlets for their contribution.
Minister Barkhad also gave special recognition to students in Borama who participated in Quran recitations during the May 18 anniversary events.
According to the minister, the 35th anniversary celebrations concluded peacefully across Somaliland, reflecting the territory’s continued stability and public unity.
