HARGEISA, Somaliland (HORN POST) — Somaliland’s Minister of Information, Culture and Awareness, Barkhad Jama Batuun, held talks with senior representatives from DT Global and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to strengthen cooperation on cultural development and preservation initiatives.
The meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters in Hargeisa, focused on expanding partnerships aimed at promoting Somaliland’s cultural heritage and safeguarding its historical assets. Discussions highlighted the urgent need to modernize and digitize archival materials held by Radio Hargeisa, Somaliland National Television, and the state-run Dawan newspaper.
Officials emphasized that transforming legacy media archives into modern digital formats is critical to preserving national history and improving public access to information.
Minister Batun reaffirmed that cultural development and the promotion of Somali language and arts remain key national priorities. He also underscored the need for a major national theater to support performing arts, cultural expression, and creative industries.
Following the meeting, the delegation conducted a field visit to assess the condition of archival collections at Radio Hargeisa, Somaliland National Television, and Dawan newspaper, evaluating opportunities for modernization and long-term preservation.
Representatives from DT Global and SDC expressed commitment to supporting Somaliland’s cultural sector, including initiatives focused on heritage protection, archive digitization, and institutional capacity building.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to deepen collaboration and accelerate joint projects aimed at advancing cultural development and modernizing Somaliland’s national media archives.
