HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) — Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has announced progress on a national “digital sovereignty” initiative, including efforts related to how Somaliland is represented on Google Maps, officials said.
Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Adan Bakal briefed the Cabinet on the strategic importance of digital sovereignty, describing it as critical to protecting national data, strengthening communications infrastructure, and enhancing Somaliland’s global visibility in an increasingly digital world.
The minister said the initiative comes at a time of heightened geopolitical sensitivity, noting that Somaliland faces growing external pressure in the digital space. He emphasized that strengthening digital sovereignty would help safeguard national interests, improve government service delivery, and support technology-driven diplomacy.
Bakal highlighted that digital sovereignty could play a key role in boosting Somaliland’s international profile, particularly through accurate digital representation and visibility on global platforms.
As part of the plan, the minister announced the formation of a specialized task force composed of experts tasked with developing and implementing a comprehensive national strategy. The group will focus on policy design, technical execution, and long-term protection of Somaliland’s digital infrastructure and identity.
He called on Cabinet members to prioritize the initiative, framing it as a national imperative for the country’s future development and international engagement.
