WASHINGTON – (Hornpost) Momentum is growing in Washington for the United States to formally recognize Somaliland’s independence, as former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Herman J. Cohen has added his voice to the push led by Senator Ted Cruz.
Cohen, who oversaw African policy at the State Department between 1989 and 1993, argued that recognition of Somaliland would advance U.S. strategic interests in the Horn of Africa while countering Beijing’s expanding influence. “I recommend the State Department proceed with its policy review and formally accept the Republic of Somaliland as a nation,” he posted on X, citing a Semafor report.
His comments come just days after Senator Cruz, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Africa, urged President Donald Trump to grant official recognition. Cruz described Somaliland as “a critical security and diplomatic partner for the United States, helping America advance our national security interests in the Horn of Africa and beyond.”
Cruz also cautioned that China is “using economic and diplomatic coercion to punish Somaliland for its support for Taiwan,” stressing that recognition would provide a safeguard against Beijing’s pressure.
