Hargeisa – (Hornpost) – Former United States Ambassador to Somalia, Larry André, has suggested that Washington could potentially recognize Somaliland.
Speaking on U.S. foreign policy, André noted that there is growing momentum within the Republican Party, where several prominent members are strongly advocating for Somaliland’s recognition. He emphasized that these lawmakers wield considerable influence in shaping America’s foreign policy decisions, which could pave the way for a significant shift in the U.S. position toward Somaliland.
The remarks come at a time when Somaliland continues its decades-long pursuit of international recognition after declaring independence from Somalia in 1991. While no country has yet granted official recognition, Somaliland has maintained stability, democratic governance, and independent institutions that distinguish it from Somalia.
Analysts believe that U.S. recognition, if it happens, would represent a major diplomatic breakthrough for Somaliland and could encourage other nations to follow suit.
