Parliament Leadership Welcomes the Mayor of Sheffield
Hargeisa (Hornpost) – The First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Somaliland, Hon. Saed Mire Farah (Giire), today warmly received the Mayor of the City of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, Ms. Safiya Said Barbraawi, who is on an official visit to Somaliland and paid a courtesy call to the Parliament of Somaliland, composed of both the House of Representatives and the House of Elders (Guurti).
During the reception, discussions focused on Somaliland’s quest for international recognition, cooperation in the field of security, strengthening fire and rescue services in Somaliland, reinforcing the historical ties between Sheffield and Somaliland, and expanding bilateral collaboration in community development.
Deputy Speaker Giire, in his remarks, highlighted the history of the House of Representatives and its role in state-building in Somaliland. He noted that Mayor Safiya’s Somaliland roots make her visit especially meaningful, further cementing the bond between the people of Somaliland and Sheffield.
For her part, Mayor Safiya Said Barbraawi expressed her gratitude to Deputy Speaker Giire and the Parliament for the warm welcome. She underlined the deep social and historical connections between the people of Somaliland and the City of Sheffield, pledging to work towards transforming these ties into tangible opportunities for development.
The Mayor of Sheffield and her delegation also paid a visit to the House of Elders, where they were received by the Speaker of the House of Elders, Hon. Saleban Mohamoud Adan.
Mayor Safiya thanked the Speaker for the gracious hospitality and reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening cooperation between the House of Elders and the wider Parliament of Somaliland.
