Hargeisa (Hornpost) The Opposition Kulmiye Party has strongly condemned the detention of ten traditional elders from Gabiley, describing the arrests as unlawful and unprecedented in Somaliland’s history.
According to a statement by Kulmiye’s spokesperson, Mustafe Cabdi Ciise (Shiine), the elders were taken into custody after planning a meeting to discuss concerns over the Wajaale Valley project. The party said the detentions appear to be an attempt to suppress dialogue and public consultation on the development initiative.
“This action by the government is unprecedented,” the statement read. “In the past, elders were only involved when there were inter-clan security issues. Today’s detention recalls authoritarian practices that should have no place in modern Somaliland”
Kulmiye emphasized that disagreements over the Wajaale Valley project should be resolved through consultation and consensus rather than coercion.
The Opposition party called on the government to fully explain the project’s benefits to the residents of Gabiley and ensure that the local population is engaged in decision-making.
The statement concluded with a demand for the immediate release of the detained elders and the restoration of their freedom.
