ABUJA / CAIRO, (Horn post) — Morocco has been officially declared the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the original result against Senegal.
Senegal had initially defeated Morocco 1–0 in the final on January 18. The match, however, was mired in controversy after Senegalese players refused to continue following a penalty awarded to Morocco in extra time while the score was still level.
After a 17-minute delay, play resumed. Morocco’s Brahim Díaz had his penalty saved, but Senegal’s Pape Gueye scored what appeared to be the winning goal.
CAF later ruled that Senegal’s refusal to play violated competition regulations. The governing body forfeited the match in favor of Morocco, officially recording the score as 3–0, and awarding Morocco the AFCON 2025 title.
The ruling has sparked widespread debate across the continent, raising questions about tournament discipline, officiating standards, and the governance of African football.
