IRGC acknowledges killing of top naval intelligence and fleet commanders amid escalating Israel-Iran tensions.
TEHRAN (Horn post) Iran has officially confirmed the death of Behnam Rezaei, a senior commander in the country’s naval intelligence, following reports of a targeted strike carried out by Israel on March 26.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement acknowledging Rezaei’s death, several days after Iranian media reported a commemorative event for him on March 27.
According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), Rezaei was responsible for gathering intelligence on neighboring countries and coordinating cooperation among various intelligence agencies. The strike that killed him was part of a broader Israeli operation targeting senior Iranian military officials.
On the same day, Israel also claimed responsibility for an attack on IRGC Navy Commander Alireza Tangsiri, who oversaw operations related to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC confirmed Tangsiri’s death four days after Israel’s announcement.
The confirmations mark a rare public acknowledgment by Iran of the deaths of high-ranking military personnel resulting from foreign operations and highlight continuing tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv over security in the region.
The deaths of Rezaei and Tangsiri underscore the ongoing risk faced by senior Iranian commanders amid heightened intelligence and military operations targeting Iran’s strategic assets.
