Europe–US Tensions Rise as Trump Threatens Tariffs over Greenland Dispute.
Washington (Horn post) Tensions between Europe and the United States are escalating after former US President Donald Trump issued fresh threats to impose tariffs on European countries opposing his demand to exert control over Greenland.
Trump warned that he would “100 percent” follow through on his threat to levy tariffs against European nations that resist his stance on Greenland, further straining transatlantic relations.
Meanwhile, the European Parliament has been informed that it will suspend the ratification of the EU–US trade agreement reached in July, according to sources close to the Parliament’s International Trade Committee. The suspension is expected to be formally announced on Tuesday afternoon in Strasbourg.
The trade deal was agreed in July following talks between Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at Trump’s golf resort in Scotland. Under the agreement, US tariffs on European goods were reduced to 15 percent, a move that was initially welcomed in Brussels, particularly as Trump had earlier threatened tariffs as high as 30 percent on EU imports.
However, the agreement still requires approval by the European Parliament. The International Trade Committee has yet to complete its review, raising uncertainty over the future of the deal amid the growing political dispute.
Separately, UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper reiterated Britain’s position on Greenland, stressing that the island’s future should be decided solely by “the people of Greenland and the Danish people,” underscoring European resistance to Trump’s remarks.
The latest developments signal a sharp deterioration in EU–US relations, with trade, sovereignty, and geopolitical influence increasingly intertwined.
