Canberra (Horn post) — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed “deep concern” over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, stressing the urgent need for a negotiated settlement to end the war involving Iran.
Speaking alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra, von der Leyen underscored the importance of diplomacy in de-escalating tensions and restoring regional stability.
“It is critically important that we achieve a negotiated solution to end the conflicts we are witnessing in the Middle East,” she said, warning that continued escalation risks broader geopolitical and economic consequences.
Von der Leyen also revealed that several European Union member states are preparing to participate in a potential mission to safeguard the Strait of Hormuz once hostilities subside. The key maritime corridor is vital for global energy shipments, particularly oil and gas exports.
She highlighted the indirect global impact of the conflict, noting that rising energy prices, trade disruptions, and economic uncertainty are already being felt across Europe and beyond.
“We are all experiencing the ripple effects of this crisis on gas and oil prices, our trade, and our societies,” she said, emphasizing that the security of the Strait of Hormuz is essential for the stability of global energy supply chains.
The EU’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in the region, with international actors increasingly calling for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and protect critical infrastructure linked to global markets.
