WASHINGTON, D.C. (Horn post) Ethiopia has secured strong backing from U.S. government agencies, financial institutions, and major industry players for the planned Bishoftu International Airport, following a high-level financing roadshow in Washington, marking a major step toward launching one of Africa’s largest aviation infrastructure projects.
Confidence in Ethiopia’s Economic Reforms
Senior U.S. officials expressed confidence in Ethiopia’s ongoing economic reform agenda, highlighting progress toward a more open, private sector-led economy. Officials cited improving macroeconomic stability and a favorable long-term growth outlook as key drivers of investor confidence.
Major Aviation Hub in the Making
The Bishoftu International Airport is being positioned as a high-impact, bankable investment expected to transform air connectivity across Africa. The project aims to boost trade, strengthen logistics networks, and establish Ethiopia as a leading global aviation hub.
The airport is also expected to enhance Africa’s integration into global transport and trade systems.
Strategic U.S.–Ethiopia Partnership
The initiative reflects a deepening commercial partnership between Ethiopia and the United States, creating opportunities for U.S. companies while supporting Ethiopia’s economic transformation.
Officials say the project will serve as a cornerstone for expanded bilateral economic cooperation and reinforce long-standing ties between the two countries.
“A National Project with Global Impact”
Ethiopia’s Finance Minister, Ahmed Shide, described the airport as a transformative national priority.
“The Bishoftu International Airport is a national priority with global impact—designed to unlock trade, investment, and connectivity across Africa and beyond,” he said. “The strong engagement in Washington underscores confidence in Ethiopia’s economic future.”
Backed by Ethiopian Airlines
The project is anchored by Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline, which continues to drive strong passenger and cargo growth.
CEO Mesfin Tassew emphasized the importance of international partnerships:
“Our collaboration with U.S. partners has been central to Ethiopian Airlines’ global success. This project builds on that foundation—positioning us to meet rising demand and further strengthen Addis Ababa as a leading aviation hub.”
Strong Institutional Support
The African Development Bank, acting as the project’s lead arranger, underscored its financial viability.
Vice President Hassatou N’Sele said:
“This is a bankable, high-impact project with strong fundamentals. Bishoftu Airport will drive regional integration, boost competitiveness, and catalyze sustainable growth across Africa”
Progress Toward Implementation
Discussions in Washington have advanced financing structures and implementation plans, providing practical, solution-driven outcomes and accelerating the project’s execution timeline.
Momentum Builds
With strong U.S. backing, growing private sector interest, and coordinated institutional support, the Bishoftu International Airport project is gaining momentum as one of Africa’s most ambitious and strategically significant aviation developments.
