ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Horn post) Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Abdoulkader Houssein Omar met Ethiopian Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed on Thursday in Addis Ababa, delivering a message from Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh and discussing strengthening bilateral cooperation, according to official statements from both sides.
The high-level diplomatic visit, described by Djibouti media as “urgent,” focused on enhancing Djibouti–Ethiopia relations, with particular emphasis on economic integration, trade connectivity, and regional security in the strategically sensitive Horn of Africa.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed confirmed the meeting in a statement on social media, saying he received the Djiboutian foreign minister at his office, where he was handed a message from President Guelleh. He added that both officials also discussed ongoing cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
The talks took place in a “constructive and cordial atmosphere,” with both sides reaffirming what they described as a shared commitment to a strategic partnership viewed as essential for stability in the Horn of Africa.
Djibouti and Ethiopia maintain deeply interconnected economic and security ties, with Ethiopia relying heavily on Djibouti’s ports for international trade.
Analysis
The visit comes amid heightened diplomatic activity in the region, where shifting alliances and strategic competition among regional and international actors continue to shape Red Sea and Gulf of Aden geopolitics.
Analysts in the region have linked the timing of the visit to broader diplomatic movements across the Horn of Africa, including increased engagement between regional states and external powers over security, maritime routes, and political recognition issues.
