Djibouti Launches Presidential Election Campaign as Guelle Seeks Sixth Term.

DJIBOUTI CITY, (Horn post) Campaigning for Djibouti’s presidential election scheduled for April 10 officially began this week, with long-serving President Ismail Omar Guelleh launching his bid for a sixth term in office.

Large crowds gathered in the capital, Djibouti City, where President Guelleh addressed supporters at a public rally, marking the start of nationwide campaign activities. The incumbent has since toured several cities, receiving strong public backing through organized demonstrations and campaign events.

Guelleh, who has been in power since 1999, is seeking another five-year term, extending his decades-long leadership in the strategically located Horn of Africa nation. His candidacy is widely viewed as dominant, given his long-standing political influence and the strength of the ruling party.

Mohamed Farah Samatar the main opposition candidate

The president faces a single challenger, Mohamed Farah Samatar, leader of the Centre of Unified Democrats (CDU), who has entered the race as the main opposition candidate.

Analysts say the election is expected to reinforce Guelleh’s grip on power, although it comes amid ongoing discussions about political reform and democratic participation in Djibouti.

The April 10 vote is being closely watched both domestically and internationally, as it will shape the country’s political direction and governance for the next five years.
