ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Horn post)— Adanech Abebe on Friday inaugurated the newly built Adwa Shopping Center and Transport Terminal in the Piasa district of Addis Ababa, marking a major urban redevelopment project aimed at modernizing transportation and commercial services in the Ethiopian capital.
The project was developed through the demolition and redevelopment of the area formerly known as “Doro Manekiya,” transforming it into a modern commercial and transport hub designed to improve mobility and public services.
The new facility includes more than 101 retail shops, a two-level underground parking structure, taxi and bus terminals, cafés, restaurants, and electric vehicle charging stations. The complex also features modern elevators, office spaces, a clinic, pharmacy, advanced firefighting systems, security control infrastructure, and a plaza fountain.
Mayor Adanech said the shops and cafés within the center were allocated to residents as part of efforts to support community livelihoods and economic participation.
According to the mayor, the Adwa Shopping Center and Transport Terminal were designed to provide residents with a cleaner, safer, and more organized transportation environment, replacing the congestion, dust, and weather-related challenges previously experienced in the area.
She also highlighted Piassa as one of the key locations undergoing large-scale corridor development in Addis Ababa, noting that the district is home to the Adwa Victory Memorial and other infrastructure projects aimed at boosting tourism and preserving Ethiopia’s historical heritage.
Adanech expressed appreciation to all stakeholders involved in completing the project on schedule and according to quality standards before opening it to the public.
