Nature at Risk: Somaliland Battles Forest Fire on Historic Daalo Ridge

Somaliland Forces Join Efforts to Contain Daalo Mountain Wildfire as Damage Escalates

Erigavo (Hornpost) Various branches of the Somaliland security forces have joined ongoing efforts to extinguish the wildfire engulfing Daalo Mountain and surrounding areas in the Sanaag region, amid growing concerns about severe environmental and wildlife damage.

The blaze, which began in the highlands of Daalo, has now spread to nearby agricultural settlements, posing a serious threat to local livelihoods and ecosystems. The Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed that over 200 farms have already been destroyed by the fire, leaving many farming families devastated and without support.

Efforts to control the fire are being hindered by the rugged mountainous terrain, which limits access for firefighting vehicles. However, with the joint coordination of fire services, regional authorities, local communities, and national security forces, operations to contain and suppress the fire are ongoing.

Authorities are calling for urgent support and continue to assess the full extent of the damage to both the environment and the region’s wildlife.

Latest Information from the Fire and Rescue Unit of Somaliland:

The Fire and Rescue Unit of Somaliland in Erigavo are currently engaged in efforts to extinguish a large wildfire that broke out in the highlands of Erigavo, specifically from Xero Mooli to Xidhi Xidh.

The fire started in elevated mountainous terrain, making it difficult for fire trucks to access the area. Wildfires of this scale and in such rugged terrain are typically extinguished using helicopters.

However, the Fire and Rescue Unit, with the support of regional and district authorities, various security forces, and the local community, continues to work tirelessly to contain and suppress the fire.

The Fire Department reiterates to the public that in operations like this, even if all firefighting vehicles are mobilized, it is extremely difficult for them to navigate such mountainous and steep terrain. Nevertheless, with the ongoing efforts, there is strong hope that the fire will soon be brought under control.
