ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Horn post) Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in Addis Ababa late Friday to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission ahead of Ethiopia’s 7th General Election, widely viewed as one of the continent’s most closely watched political events.
Kenyatta, who is serving as Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), was received at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport by African Union officials, including Director Patience Chirad, alongside other dignitaries.
The African Union mission is expected to monitor the electoral process, assess voting procedures and provide recommendations aimed at supporting transparent and credible elections in Ethiopia.
The polls come at a critical moment for Ethiopia as authorities seek to strengthen democratic institutions amid political tensions, economic challenges and ongoing security concerns in parts of the country.
International and regional observers have increasingly focused attention on the election, with analysts describing it as one of Africa’s most significant votes this year due to Ethiopia’s geopolitical influence and population size.
The African Union observation team is expected to engage with electoral officials, political parties, civil society groups and other stakeholders throughout the voting process before issuing its preliminary findings after polling concludes.
