HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) The President of the Republic of Somaliland Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro officially launched the Somaliland Independence Recognition Institution on May 18, 2026, describing it as a major step in strengthening Somaliland’s international recognition campaign and preserving the nation’s legal and historical identity.
The newly established institute, formally known as the Somaliland Independence Recognition Institution, will serve as an international research and diplomatic center focused on advancing Somaliland’s legal, political, and historical case for self-determination and international recognition.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony in Hargeisa, President Irro said the creation of the institute reflects the political maturity of Somaliland and the people’s commitment to safeguarding their sovereignty and achieving full international recognition.
The president stated that the institution will play a key role in researching, documenting, and preserving Somaliland’s legal and historical archives while creating a global platform connecting academics, historians, legal experts, diplomats, and international partners supportive of Somaliland.
He added that the institute would contribute to strengthening Somaliland’s diplomatic recognition efforts, promoting studies related to peacebuilding and state-building, enhancing cooperation with international organizations, and educating younger generations about the value of Somaliland’s nationhood and sovereignty.
President Irro emphasized that Somaliland has maintained peace, political stability, democratic progress, and functioning state institutions for more than 35 years, arguing that these achievements provide Somaliland with a legitimate basis for international recognition and membership within the global community.
The launch comes as Somaliland continues to intensify diplomatic outreach and international engagement aimed at gaining broader global recognition as an independent state.
