Commander Niman Yusuf Gahnug urges troops to remain on high alert as Somaliland prepares for May 18 national celebrations marking 35 years since restoring sovereignty.
HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) The Commander of the Somaliland National Army, Niman Yuusuf Gaaxnuug, held a high-level meeting with senior officers and units from across the armed forces, focusing on strengthening national security ahead of the country’s annual May 18 Independence Day celebrations.
During the meeting, Gahnug instructed military personnel to maintain maximum vigilance and full operational readiness to safeguard public security during the nationwide celebrations commemorating Somaliland’s restoration of independence.
The commander emphasized that security agencies must work in close coordination to ensure peaceful celebrations as thousands of citizens are expected to participate in events across major cities, including Hargeisa.
Commander Gahnug also stated that this year’s commemoration carries historic significance, coming as Somaliland marks what officials describe as growing international diplomatic recognition following recognition by Israel as an independent state on Dec. 26, 2025.
On Sunday, Somaliland will celebrate the 35th anniversary since it declared the restoration of its sovereignty on May 18, 1991, following the collapse of Somalia’s central government.
