Berbera Port Investments and Red Sea Security Cooperation Place Somaliland at Center of Regional Strategy.
HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) The growing partnership between Somaliland and the United Arab Emirates has emerged as one of the most closely watched geopolitical developments in the Horn of Africa, according to an international report published by Horn Vision.
The report examines the strategic interests shared by Somaliland and the UAE, highlighting major investments in the Port of Berbera and the wider regional implications of economic and security cooperation between the two sides.
According to the analysis, the UAE’s engagement with Somaliland is part of a broader strategy aimed at transforming Berbera into a major commercial and security hub linking the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the wider Indian Ocean trade network.
The report notes that the relationship carries historical and strategic significance, particularly as geopolitical competition intensifies around Red Sea maritime routes and regional logistics corridors.
A major focus of the report is the UAE-backed development of Port of Berbera, which is viewed as a key economic opportunity for Somaliland and a strategic alternative trade gateway for the region.
The analysis states that the Berbera corridor project — including the expansion of the port, free trade zone, and airport infrastructure — could strengthen Somaliland’s role in international commerce and attract further foreign investment into the Horn of Africa.
“The UAE is building a strategic maritime network and a powerful chain of coastal influence through Berbera, which is critical for Indian Ocean trade,” the report stated.
It added that the Berbera corridor could also provide Ethiopia with “a new trade route that is cheaper and more secure than Djibouti,” potentially reducing transportation costs and diversifying access to seaports for Africa’s second-most populous country.
The report further argues that the Somaliland-UAE partnership extends beyond commercial cooperation and has become increasingly tied to regional maritime security and the protection of key shipping lanes across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Analysts cited in the report say the growing alliance could significantly influence the geopolitical balance of the Horn of Africa, particularly as Gulf states increase their economic and security involvement in the region.
“This partnership gives Somaliland an opportunity to strengthen its political visibility and regional influence,” the report concluded.
