Somaliland’s First President Abdirahman“Tuur” Remembered as Founding Father and National Hero

Former SNM Chairman Played Key Role in Somaliland’s Liberation, Reconciliation and State-Building Efforts After 1991 Declaration of Independence.

HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) The late Abdirahman Ahmed Ali Tuur, the first president of the Republic of Somaliland and former chairman of the Somali National Movement (SNM), is being remembered as one of the most influential figures in Somaliland’s struggle for self-determination, peacebuilding, and state formation.

Tuur played a central role in Somaliland’s liberation struggle and the restoration of Somaliland’s independence in 1991, earning recognition as a founding father of the self-declared republic.

Widely regarded as a nationalist leader with long-term political vision, Tuur was instrumental in uniting Somaliland communities during the armed struggle against Somalia’s former military regime and the difficult years of post-war reconstruction.

During the SNM liberation campaign, he helped coordinate resistance efforts, mobilize local support, and strengthen the movement’s international political outreach. His leadership eventually led to his election as chairman of the SNM, the movement credited with liberating Somaliland.

In 1991, following the historic Burao conference where Somaliland clans declared the restoration of Somaliland’s sovereignty, Tuur was elected as the first president of Somaliland, marking the beginning of a new political era for the territory.

As president, he focused on reconciliation, peacebuilding, and establishing Somaliland’s earliest state institutions after years of conflict and destruction. His administration prioritized dialogue, community cooperation, and rebuilding governance structures in a region emerging from civil war.

Tuur is also remembered for his role in laying the foundations for Somaliland’s peace conferences and reconciliation initiatives, which later became central to the stability and democratic system Somaliland promotes today.

Political observers and historians continue to describe him as a calm and pragmatic leader who dedicated his life to defending Somaliland’s political identity and national aspirations.

Although Abdirahman Ahmed Ali Tuur died in 2003, his legacy remains deeply embedded in Somaliland’s modern history. Many Somalilanders continue to honor his contribution to the liberation struggle, national reconciliation efforts, and the establishment of Somaliland’s governing institutions.
