ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Horn post) Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Friday officially inaugurated the new Arada Recreational Park in the capital, Addis Ababa, marking a key milestone in the government’s ongoing urban renewal and city beautification program.
In a post on social media, Abiy said the project forms part of a broader vision to modernize and transform Addis Ababa into a more livable, competitive, and globally recognized African capital.
He said the Arada area, once a neglected and high-risk neighborhood, has been fully rehabilitated and converted into a modern public space that now stands as one of the city’s emerging landmarks.
The redevelopment includes pedestrian walkways, jogging and cycling tracks, commercial facilities such as shops, restaurants, and banks, as well as modern sports and fitness infrastructure designed for public use.
Officials say the project is part of a wider city transformation agenda led by the ruling Prosperity Party government, aimed at boosting tourism, expanding green public spaces, and creating modern urban recreation hubs.
Abiy added that Ethiopia aims to position itself as a leading force in Africa and a visible competitor on the global stage, emphasizing continued government efforts to turn public aspirations into tangible development outcomes.
The Arada Recreational Park is among several flagship urban projects reshaping Addis Ababa’s landscape as the city undergoes rapid infrastructure and aesthetic upgrades.
