Ethiopia Denies Involvement in Khartoum Airport Drone Attack as Sudan Escalates Accusations.
ADDIS ABABA / KHARTOUM (Horn post) Ethiopia has firmly rejected allegations by Sudan that it took part in a drone attack targeting Khartoum International Airport, intensifying diplomatic tensions amid the ongoing Sudan conflict.
Sudanese authorities recently accused Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates of carrying out a coordinated drone strike on the airport in the Sudanese capital. According to Sudan’s military, the attack forced the suspension of operations at Khartoum International Airport for 72 hours.
Sudan Armed Forces spokesperson Brig. Gen. Aasim Awad Abdelwahab said the government possesses “sufficient evidence” linking both Ethiopia and the UAE to the strike. He did not publicly disclose details of the alleged evidence.
Ethiopia swiftly dismissed the accusations as unfounded. In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the claims as “baseless” and politically motivated, suggesting they are intended to deepen foreign involvement narratives in Sudan’s civil war.
“The Government of Ethiopia rejects the latest baseless accusations made against it,” the statement said, adding that Ethiopia and Sudan share “historic and enduring bonds of friendship.”
The Ethiopian government also accused elements within Sudan’s armed forces of supporting hostile groups along its western border, including alleged cooperation with Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) fighters. Addis Ababa claimed there is “ample and credible evidence” that Sudan has served as a base for anti-Ethiopian forces—an assertion Sudan has not publicly addressed.
Ethiopia further called for dialogue between warring factions in Sudan, emphasizing that “there is no military solution” to the crisis. It urged an immediate humanitarian truce followed by a sustained ceasefire and a civilian-led political transition.
The United Arab Emirates has not issued a response to the allegations as of publication.
Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, with fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and rival paramilitary groups causing widespread humanitarian and infrastructure crises. Accusations of foreign involvement have been a recurring feature of the conflict, further complicating diplomatic efforts to break up peace.
