Somaliland marks International Workers’ Day in Hargeisa as Acting President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi pledges youth job creation and labor reforms.

HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) Acting president, Vice President of the Republic of Somaliland Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, on Thursday joined officials, labor leaders and political figures in marking International Workers’ Day, underscoring the role of workers in national development and pledging expanded job creation initiatives.

 

The ceremony, held at the State Employees Hall in Hargeisa, drew senior government representatives, including officials from the Ministry of Employment, Social Affairs and Family, leaders of the ruling Waddani party, and the Civil Service Commission.

 

This year’s theme, “Workers are the backbone of national development,” framed discussions highlighting the importance of strengthening labor rights and improving workforce conditions across Somaliland.

 

In a keynote address, Acting president, Vice President of the Republic of Somaliland Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi congratulated workers on the global observance and expressed optimism about the country’s trajectory.

 

“On this occasion, I extend my congratulations to all workers and pray we reach next year in good health,” he said. “This year’s commemoration is different from previous ones, as our country has achieved international recognition. As a government, we are ready to create job opportunities for youth and support anyone who brings forward viable initiatives.”

 

He added that the government stands alongside workers and expects mutual commitment to nation-building.

 

Waddani ruling Party Chairman Hirsi Ali Haji Hassan also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the need for collaboration between government institutions and the labor force to drive economic growth.

 

Minister of Employment, Social Affairs and Family Milgo Mohamed Elmi Sambaloshe highlighted reforms undertaken by her ministry, including the establishment of a labor grievance office to address disputes between employers and employees. She said the ministry has introduced several initiatives aimed at improving working conditions and supporting different sectors of the workforce.

 

Somaliland annually marks International Workers’ Day on May 1, aligning with global observances that recognize the contributions of workers and advocate for labor rights, fair wages, and safe working environments.
