
Somalia and China agree to expand cooperation in diplomacy, security, fisheries, and blue economy during high-level talks in Mogadishu.
MOGADISHU, (Horn post) The governments of Somalia and China have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening strategic cooperation following high-level talks held in the Somali capital, according to a statement from Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Ali met with China’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Hu Changchun, at the ministry headquarters in Mogadishu to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and expanding areas of mutual cooperation.
The discussions focused on the strategic importance of Somalia–China relations, with both sides emphasizing long-standing diplomatic ties and the geopolitical significance of Somalia as a key maritime gateway for regional and global trade.
China reiterated its firm support for Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity, while also highlighting its continued willingness to work closely with Mogadishu on shared development priorities.
The Somali government, in turn, reaffirmed its commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in priority sectors, including economic development and institutional partnerships.
Both sides also explored opportunities to expand collaboration in fisheries and the blue economy, recognizing their importance for sustainable growth and the effective utilization of Somalia’s extensive maritime resources.
Officials from both countries also discussed enhanced cooperation in peacebuilding, security coordination, and multilateral engagement in international forums.
The meeting underscores growing diplomatic engagement between Mogadishu and Beijing as Somalia seeks to strengthen economic partnerships and attract broader international cooperation.
