President Hassan Sheikh leads 66th army anniversary event featuring weapons, armored vehicles, and aircraft amid ongoing military modernization efforts.
MOGADISHU, Somalia (Horn post) Somalia marked the 66th anniversary of its national army with a large-scale military display in the capital on Saturday, showcasing armored vehicles, heavy weapons, and aircraft in what officials described as evidence of growing national defense capability.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended the ceremony held at the Ministry of Defense in Mogadishu, where Somali National Army units conducted a parade highlighting operations across land, air, and maritime domains. The display included military vehicles, infantry formations, and aircraft, reflecting what authorities say is an ongoing effort to modernize the armed forces.
Officials said the showcased equipment represents improvements in mobility, coordination, and counterterrorism readiness as the government continues rebuilding the Somali National Army (SNA) after decades of instability.
President Mohamud praised the armed forces for their role in national security and counterinsurgency operations, emphasizing continued investment in training, equipment, and institutional reform.
“The heroes of the Somali National Army have saved millions of Somalis,” the president said, adding that their contributions “will be written in history.”
As part of the ceremony, the president awarded medals for bravery to military officers involved in frontline operations and paid tribute to soldiers killed or injured in service.
In a separate development during the event, President Mohamud inaugurated newly built facilities for the Army Logistics Command and the Military Communications Directorate. The infrastructure is intended to strengthen supply chains, operational coordination, intelligence handling, and communications systems.
He also laid the foundation stone for an orphan care center for children of fallen soldiers, which will provide education, housing, and social support services.
Analysis
The public display of military hardware and aircraft has prompted discussion over whether Somalia’s armed forces are experiencing a measurable rise in capability or primarily demonstrating symbolic progress.
While the parade highlighted visible improvements in equipment and organization, security analysts note that true military strength depends on sustained logistics, training standards, command cohesion, and long-term operational effectiveness.
Somalia has increased investment in rebuilding its defense institutions and expanding specialized units, particularly in counterterrorism operations against militant groups still active in parts of the country. International partnerships have also played a role in training and capacity-building efforts.
However, challenges remain in maintaining equipment, ensuring consistent supply chains, and fully integrating air and ground operations into a unified command structure.
The Mogadishu display therefore reflects both progress and ongoing limitations — signaling a strengthening military image while underscoring the broader task of transforming the Somali National Army into a fully modernized and self-sustaining force.
