Somaliland President Meets EU Ambassador as Both Sides Seek to Deepen Cooperation.

Hargeisa (Hornpost) — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilaahi (Cirro) on Monday received EU Ambassador to Somalia & Somaliland Francesca Di Mauro at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa, where the two sides discussed security, governance and future development cooperation.

Ambassador Di Mauro arrived with a large EU delegation on an official visit aimed at assessing Somaliland’s political and security landscape.

According to a statement from the Presidency, President Cirro underscored that peace and stability remain his administration’s top priority, highlighting recent steps taken to consolidate security. These include the formal integration of more than 6,000 community security personnel and the government-led efforts that brought an end to the El-Afweyn conflict through dialogue and reconciliation.

The President also briefed the delegation on the government’s ongoing peace initiative in Erigavo, which aims to strengthen social cohesion and prevent future conflict.

Cirro reiterated Somaliland’s long-standing position on its political and territorial independence, urging the EU to recognize the territory’s decades-long record of stability, democratic governance and institutional development. He further called for increased EU development support, arguing that Somaliland requires dedicated programs that reflect its specific needs and circumstances.

Ambassador Di Mauro praised the government’s early achievements, saying the EU values Somaliland’s relative stability and democratic culture. She reaffirmed Brussels’ willingness to expand cooperation, particularly in security and community development.

The meeting ended with both sides agreeing to sustain momentum and broaden their partnership in support of peace and development in the wider Horn of Africa.
