President of Somaliland Lays Foundation Stone for New Taiwan Medical Center and Hargeisa Group Hospital Modernization

Hargeisa – (Hornpost)– The President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), has officially laid the foundation stone for the new Taiwan Medical Center and launched the modernization of Hargeisa Group Hospital, a milestone project funded by the Government of Taiwan.

A New Chapter in Somaliland–Taiwan Cooperation:

The new medical center, fully financed by Taiwan, represents a major step toward strengthening Somaliland’s healthcare system and underscores the deepening friendship between the two republics. The project is part of a broader cooperation framework that includes health, education, technology, and institutional capacity building.

President Cirro, in his remarks during the ceremony, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Government and people of Taiwan for their unwavering partnership and meaningful contributions to Somaliland’s development.

“The Taiwan Medical Center is a symbol of genuine friendship and shared progress between our two nations,” the President said. He praised Taiwan’s commitment to improving the quality of life in Somaliland through sustainable and impactful projects.

Raising Healthcare Standards:

The President noted that the new Taiwan Medical Center and the upgraded Hargeisa Group Hospital will significantly enhance the quality of medical services in the country, reduce the need for patients to travel abroad, and strengthen the capacity of national health institutions.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Health — including the Minister, Deputy Minister, and Director General — thanked Taiwan for its investment and described the initiative as a “turning point” in the development of Somaliland’s health sector.

Voices of Support and Partnership:

The ceremony was attended by government ministers, the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Mayor of Hargeisa, the Governor of Maroodi-jeex, Dr. Edna Adan, the Director of Hargeisa Group Hospital, and several dignitaries. All speakers emphasized the significance of the project as a reflection of the enduring partnership between Somaliland and Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Representative to Somaliland, Mr. Allen Lou, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to continue supporting Somaliland across multiple sectors — including healthcare, education, technology, and capacity development for national institutions.

Strengthening Ties for a Shared Future:

The event concluded in a spirit of friendship and optimism. Both governments reiterated their shared commitment to deepen collaboration in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, technology, and democratic governance — marking another step forward in the flourishing Somaliland–Taiwan relationship.

Taiwan Representative Office in Somaliland stated what project will be like:

Following Taiwan Avenue and Somaliland National Data Center, we are delighted to cohost the groundbreaking ceremony of Taiwan Medical Center. Congratulations! TODAY is OUR DAY!

Commitment made. Commitment fulfilled. That is the Taiwan Model.

Taiwan Medical Center is the first hospital in Africa that bears the name of Taiwan. This is a 22-million-dollar project as listed in the contract signed between Ministry of Health Development and Hospital design company Holder, and in the MOU signed between Taiwan and Somaliland Governments. The hospital will be a two-story building with 105 beds, and 3 brand new operating theatres, aiming to boost the surgical capacity of Hargeisa Group Hospital by 100%.

Taiwan medical center will not only serve as a platform for Taiwan to channel more of our medical capacities into Somaliland but also act as a hub for international collaboration amongst like-minded partners.

We express our heartfelt appreciation towards the government and people of Somaliland, international partners and concerned parties for their input and support! Friendship, Partnership, and Leadership matters!
