PRESIDENT OF SOMALIA OPENS THE SECOND EAST AFRICAN ECONOMIC COOPERATION SUMMIT (EACON-2025)

Mogadishu, (Hornpost) October 7, 2025 – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today officially opened the Second East African Economic Cooperation Summit (EACON-2025) hosted in Mogadishu. The conference focuses on advancing economic, political, and social integration among East African nations.

The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdi Hayir Maareeye, and the Minister of Education, Farah Abdiqadir, attended the opening session alongside the President. Also present were international diplomats based in Mogadishu, representatives from East African member states, and other distinguished guests.

In his keynote address, President Hassan Sheikh underscored the importance of Somalia hosting the summit, describing it as a symbol of renewed confidence and the growing role Somalia is playing within the regional bloc since formally joining the East African Community (EAC).

“Mogadishu is a city with a rich history of trade and connectivity. Hosting this summit demonstrates Somalia’s strong commitment to playing a leading role in regional integration and in advancing peace and trade across East Africa,” he said.

The President called on scholars, business leaders, and political figures to actively contribute to the integration process by providing research-based recommendations and practical strategies that can promote economic growth, investment, and political cooperation across the region.

The summit brought together business leaders, academics, and regional and international experts who deliberated on accelerating economic, political, and social integration and strengthening the role of the East African Community in driving Africa’s broader development agenda.
