Mogadishu, October 8, 2025(hornpost.com/) The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has praised Somalia’s successful step in regaining full, independent control over the management, monitoring, and reporting of human rights affairs.
President Hassan Sheikh described the development as a historic milestone that reflects Somalia’s growing statehood and readiness to fulfill its national and international obligations related to the protection and promotion of human rights.
“Today marks a historic moment as Somalia has achieved tangible progress in governance and is now capable of independently carrying out its duties concerning human rights,” the President stated.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the dignity and rights of its citizens, while strengthening collaboration with regional and international partners to promote a sustainable human rights framework across the country.
Despite No Full Handover of Human Rights Responsibilities to Somalia Yet.
The Somali government and the United Nations have been working together to prepare for the handover of human rights responsibilities currently managed by UN agencies, particularly the Human Rights & Protection Group of UNTMIS.
Reports indicate that the full transfer is scheduled for October 2026, and ongoing discussions suggest that some human rights functions remain under UN oversight for the time being.
Based on current information, a complete handover has not yet occurred, but a process and planned agreement are in place for the responsibilities to be fully transferred in the future.
