U.S. Congressional Report Elevates Somaliland’s Global Strategic Profile Amid Intensifying U.S.–China Rivalry.

Hargeisa (Hornpost) — The 2025 Annual Report released by the U.S. Congressional Commission on China has highlighted the growing strategic importance of the Republic of Somaliland, describing it as an emerging focal point in the geopolitical competition between major global powers.

The report notes that increasing advocacy from U.S. lawmakers and Taiwan regarding Somaliland’s recognition has elevated the territory’s strategic value. Somaliland’s political stability, expanding economy, and its location along the Gulf of Aden — one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors — were cited as key drivers of renewed international interest.

Somaliland–Taiwan Partnership Draws Global Attention:

The U.S. report places special emphasis on the deepening relationship between Somaliland and Taiwan. Enhanced cooperation in maritime security and economic development is viewed as a “new model of engagement” that strengthens Somaliland’s diplomatic standing.

The commission noted that Taiwan’s presence in Somaliland represents a significant challenge to China’s efforts to isolate Taipei globally. It framed the Somaliland–Taiwan partnership as a symbolically powerful development reshaping political alignments in the Horn of Africa.

China’s Response and Regional Implications:

According to the report, China has taken deliberate steps intended to counter Somaliland’s growing prominence. These include diplomatic backing for the Federal Government of Somalia and public opposition to Somaliland–Taiwan cooperation.

Analysts say the Chinese response reflects a broader competition extending from the Indo-Pacific to the Red Sea, where control over shipping lanes, ports, and political influence is increasingly contested.

Expert Analysis: “Somaliland Is No Longer on the Sidelines”

Geopolitical experts argue that Somaliland is now firmly positioned within the strategic calculations of major global powers.

Dr. Amina Warsame, a Horn of Africa security analyst based in Nairobi, told Hornpost:

“Somaliland sits at one of the most important maritime crossroads in the world. Any power with long-term interests in the Red Sea, Suez, or the Indo-Pacific will inevitably pay closer attention to Hargeisa”

She added that the Taiwan partnership has intensified global focus:

“The Somaliland–Taiwan relationship signals an alignment with democratic and open-market partners. For the U.S., this is strategically significant. For China, it’s a direct concern.”

American China-policy expert Prof. Michael Darbo noted that Somaliland presents a unique challenge to Beijing’s Africa strategy:

“China’s objection is driven by two factors: Taiwan’s diplomatic activity in Somaliland and the possibility that Somaliland’s rising profile may influence other regions seeking greater autonomy or recognition. For Beijing, this is not merely a regional issue — it’s part of the global balance of power”

Dr. Amina added that Somaliland has an opportunity — and a responsibility — to manage these dynamics carefully:

“If Somaliland balances U.S., Taiwan, and regional interests wisely, it could become one of the most strategically valuable territories in the Horn of Africa.”

An Emerging Geopolitical Hub:

The Congressional report concludes that Somaliland is transitioning from a politically isolated territory into an increasingly influential actor in global diplomacy, security, and maritime affairs. Its geographic position at the entrance to the Red Sea and proximity to vital trade arteries has made it a point of interest for Washington, Beijing, and other global players.

As the geopolitical landscape in the Horn of Africa continues to shift, the report predicts that Somaliland’s role will expand further — placing it at the center of one of the world’s most consequential strategic rivalries.
