Hargeisa (Hornpost) The Chairman of the Somaliland Journalists’ Association of SOLJA, Shaafi Mohamed Ibrahim, has congratulated the media of the country on the International Press Day in a press release issued today, a copy of which reached the Hornpost Office.
The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) extends its warm congratulations to all journalists in Somaliland on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, commemorated on May 3, 2025. This day serves as a powerful symbol and a source of inspiration, highlighting the ongoing struggle journalists endure to uphold freedom of expression, access to information, and the defence of democracy.
This year’s global theme, as proposed by UNESCO, is: “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”
The theme aims to spotlight the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on modern journalism, media freedom, and the integrity of information.
SOLJA takes this opportunity to highlight the following key areas:
: We continue to advocate for a free and legal press that operates within ethical and professional standards.
’ : In the past four months, SOLJA documented 8 cases of journalists being unlawfully detained. In all cases, SOLJA has taken action to secure their release and defend their right to freedom of speech.
: SOLJA calls on journalists to actively engage with and learn how to use AI tools. We are committed to supporting the media sector through training and awareness initiatives, ensuring journalism does not fall behind in the digital age.
: We encourage journalists to strengthen their fact-checking efforts so that our society receives accurate and verified news.
Finally, SOLJA urges the Government of Somaliland, the House of Representatives, and all judicial institutions to swiftly pass and review the Media Law to provide journalists with comprehensive legal protection.
