Hargeisa (Hornpost) The President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), today received at the Presidential Palace General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), along with U.S. Deputy Ambassador Justin Davis and a high-level delegation accompanying them on an official visit to Somaliland.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between Somaliland and the United States, particularly in the areas of security, regional stability, and the protection of shared strategic interests in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.

President Cirro briefed the U.S. delegation on Somaliland’s role in promoting peace, security, and democratic governance in the region. He highlighted Somaliland’s commitment to securing its borders, countering extremist groups, and safeguarding international maritime routes in the Gulf of Aden.

General Anderson underscored Somaliland’s strategic location, describing it as vital to the security of the Red Sea and the wider Horn of Africa region. He emphasized the importance of closer cooperation between Somaliland and the United States.

Deputy Ambassador Davis praised Somaliland’s contributions to regional peace, maritime security, and its well-organized security institutions and stable political environment. He reaffirmed the United States’ interest in expanding cooperation in security, capacity-building of security agencies, and strengthening bilateral engagement.

President Cirro reiterated Somaliland’s readiness to work closely with the United States to enhance regional security, counter emerging threats—including those linked to great-power competition in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea—and address destabilizing activities in the region.

He also noted the wide opportunities for expanded cooperation between the two sides in defense, economic development, investment, and essential public services. The President stressed that Somaliland is a reliable partner for the United States in one of the most strategically important regions of the Horn of Africa.

He further pointed out that U.S. security and strategic interests in East Africa align closely with the recognition of Somaliland, given the country’s functioning democratic system, stable governance, and national army that has maintained peace for more than 30 years.

The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding to further strengthen security cooperation, advance strategic operations, and work jointly to protect stability in the Red Sea and the wider Horn of Africa.

Both sides affirmed their commitment to building a long-term, results-oriented partnership.
