Hargeisa (Hornpost) The President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), on Monday attended the national commemoration of World AIDS Day, held at the main hall of the Somaliland Police Headquarters in Hargeisa, according to a statement issued by the Presidency.
The ceremony marked the 20th annual observance of World AIDS Day in Somaliland and brought together government officials, health sector leaders, international partners, and civil society representatives. The President extended his appreciation to the National HIV/AIDS Commission, the Ministry of Health Development, and international agencies supporting the country’s HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness efforts.
Call for Stronger Prevention and Public Awareness:
In his keynote address, President Cirro delivered a series of important messages to the people of Somaliland, emphasizing the need for collective action in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS. He urged citizens to strengthen public awareness, adopt preventive measures, and deepen community understanding of the health and social challenges associated with the disease.
The President specifically encouraged Somaliland’s youth to make regular annual medical check-ups a common social practice, highlighting the importance of early detection in safeguarding individual and public health.
Appeal Against Stigma and Discrimination:
President Cirro also underscored the importance of compassion and social inclusion for people living with HIV/AIDS, urging the public to avoid stigma and discrimination.
“They are part of us, they are our brothers and sisters,” he said, stressing that individuals affected by HIV/AIDS must be treated with dignity and respect.
Commitment to Public Health and Social Protection:
The President called for national unity in advancing prevention campaigns, improving health services, and ensuring community support for vulnerable groups. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a society where public health is prioritized and where all citizens, especially those at risk—are protected.
