Hargeisa (Hornpost) Somaliland’s fast-growing security partnership with Taiwan has entered a more operational phase after a Taiwanese Coast Guard delegation wrapped up an extended working visit to Hargeisa, staying in the country until 29 November.
The delegation’s agenda focused on hands-on coordination with their Somaliland counterparts, signaling a shift from diplomatic commitments to real-time implementation.
Foreign Minister Cabdiraxman Dahir Adan, accompanied by Director-General Maxamed Cabdiraxmaan, officially received the delegation from Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council. Discussions centered on advancing joint maritime security, with both sides agreeing to intensify cooperation on coastal defense, surveillance, and counter-threat mechanisms in Somaliland waters.
HSU Chi-Yeh, a senior director within Taiwan’s Coast Guard, thanked Somaliland for the warm reception and reiterated Taiwan’s readiness to deepen the partnership. His remarks aligned with the delegation’s broader mission: to conduct technical and operational collaboration with the Somaliland Coast Guard throughout their stay.
For several days leading up to November 29, the Taiwanese officers worked directly with Somaliland’s maritime units, supporting joint implementation of the maritime cooperation agreement signed earlier this year. The cooperation included capacity-building exercises, planning of joint patrol modalities, and reviewing mechanisms for securing key shipping corridors.
Short Analysis:
The extended duration of the Taiwanese visit underscores the seriousness of the Somaliland–Taiwan maritime pact. It reflects a strategy that goes beyond symbolic alliances—both sides are actively building interoperable security structures in the Red Sea–Gulf of Aden corridor. For Taiwan, this partnership provides a rare strategic footprint in the Horn of Africa. For Somaliland, it strengthens its maritime defenses at a time when regional waters are becoming increasingly contested.
The visit also sends a subtle but unmistakable message: Hargeisa and Taipei are prepared to expand their cooperation despite geopolitical sensitivities, and maritime security is emerging as one of the most critical pillars of this partnership.
