Somalia President outlined the progress and challenges facing Somalia at 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly

New York, (Hornpost) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, delivered a speech at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, outlining the progress and challenges facing Somalia.

In his address, the President highlighted the government’s efforts to restore security, intensify the fight against terrorism, strengthen democracy, and complete the country’s constitutional process. He praised the achievements of the Somali National Army and community forces in counterterrorism operations, while urging international partners to continue supporting Somalia in this struggle.

President Mohamud reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a transparent democratic system, noting that Somalia is preparing to hold its first one-person, one-vote election in 57 years, with voter registration already underway and multiple political organizations actively participating.

On development and economic reforms, he emphasized Somalia’s work to enhance domestic revenue, improve public financial management, and seize regional and global trade opportunities.

Concluding his speech, President Mohamud addressed regional stability, the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, the importance of international cooperation, and the urgent need to confront climate change, which has severely affected agricultural production and the livelihoods of millions of pastoralist families.
