MOGADISHU, Somalia (Horn post) The President of Federal Government of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has formally invited opposition leaders grouped under the Somalia Future Council to participate in a high-level dialogue scheduled for May 10, 2026, according to a statement from the presidency.
Press release from Villa Somalia
The invitation follows a series of consultations the president has held in recent weeks with political figures, former leaders, traditional elders, and representatives from across Somali society, aimed at easing mounting political tensions.
The planned talks are expected to focus on critical national issues, including the electoral process, state-building efforts, national unity, and Somalia’s broader political direction.
In the statement, Mohamud emphasized the need for “good faith, transparency, and responsibility” in addressing what he described as “decisive national matters.” He underscored the importance of compromise and consensus to ensure meaningful outcomes from the dialogue.
“The current moment requires mutual understanding and concessions so that discussions yield tangible results,” the statement said.
The federal government reiterated its commitment to an inclusive political framework based on cooperation, consensus, and the preservation of Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and statehood.
Rising Political Dispute
The invitation comes against the backdrop of a deepening political standoff in Somalia following controversial constitutional changes passed by parliament. The amendments reportedly extend the presidential and parliamentary terms from four to five years.
Opposition groups, including members of the Somalia Future Council and leaders from Puntland and Jubaland, have rejected the move, arguing that any constitutional change must be broadly agreed upon. They maintain that the president’s current term expires on May 15, 2026, and warn they may no longer recognize the federal government if no consensus is reached.
The dispute has heightened concerns over political stability, with many Somalis recalling the crisis at the end of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed’s term in 2021, which escalated into armed confrontations in Mogadishu.
Public Frustration
Analysts say public frustration is growing over recurring election-related disputes, which have repeatedly triggered political crises and security risks. The outcome of the proposed May 10 talks is likely to be critical in determining whether Somalia can avoid another period of instability.
