Somalia Government’s EAC Parliament Nominees Rejected Over Procedural Irregularities

Mogadishu (Hornpost) — A court has ruled that the Somali government’s recent selection of representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) did not follow the required legal and procedural standards of the regional bloc.

The decision comes after concerns were raised about how the nominees were chosen, with the court stating that the selection process failed to meet the transparency and fairness benchmarks set by the East African Community (EAC).

According to the court, the individuals nominated were all aligned with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s political side, and none were elected through a competitive or inclusive process.

All the returned nominees had been selected through indirect or non-participatory methods, prompting the court to invalidate the list.

The ruling marks a significant setback for the federal government, which is seeking stronger engagement within the EAC. It also reignites domestic political debate over representation, fairness, and power-sharing within key regional institutions.

The government has not yet issued a formal response to the court’s decision, and it remains unclear when a new selection process will begin.
